The Albatross is a free adaptation of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, combining images and ideas from the poem with scientific observations about these enigmatic, awe-inspiring birds. In our work-in-progress presentation, we will take the audience through the process of building images, sounds and ideas for this new opera.
This strange and beautiful creature has haunted seafarers, artists and scientists throughout the ages. Using the spare and powerful forces of countertenor, actor and accordion, The Albatross draws on the otherworldliness of this wind-borne titan.
Countertenor Christopher Ainslie plays the albatross, the sea, and the soul of the mariner. Actor Jofre Carabén van der Meer plays the mariner, the sea, and the soul of the albatross. Accordionist Bartosz Glowacki plays the god of the sea.
